DPN – Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy of the feet

Overview

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of diabetes that affects the nerves in the feet and legs. High blood sugar levels over time can damage peripheral nerves, leading to symptoms like pain, numbness, and tingling—typically starting in the toes and feet. If left untreated, DPN can worsen and increase the risk of foot ulcers, infections, and even amputation.

Symptoms

DPN symptoms usually begin gradually in both feet and may progress over time.

Common symptoms include:

• Tingling or burning sensations

• Numbness or reduced ability to feel pain or temperature changes

• Sharp, stabbing, or electric-like pain

• Increased sensitivity to touch

• Muscle weakness or loss of coordination in the feet

• Sores or wounds on the feet that heal slowly or go unnoticed

When to see a doctor

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:

• Persistent numbness or burning in your feet

• Pain that interferes with sleep or daily activities

• Balance problems or frequent tripping

• Cuts, blisters, or sores on your feet that don’t heal properly

Early evaluation can help prevent serious complications.

Causes and Risk Factors

DPN is caused by long-term high blood sugar levels that damage nerves over time.

Other contributing factors include:

• Poorly controlled diabetes

• High blood pressure and cholesterol

• Smoking

• Obesity

• Kidney disease

• Long duration of diabetes

Medication and Treatment Risks

While DPN can’t be cured, it can be managed with proper treatment focused on slowing progression, relieving pain, and preventing complications.

Treatment options include:

• Blood sugar control through medication, diet, and lifestyle changes

• Pain management with medications (e.g., pregabalin, duloxetine)

• Foot care to prevent ulcers and infections

• Physical therapy for strength and balance

Medication risks:

• Drowsiness, dizziness, or mood changes with nerve pain medications

• Interactions with other diabetes or blood pressure medications

Disclaimer: Always talk to your doctor before starting any new medication or supplement to ensure it’s safe and doesn’t interfere with your diabetes treatment plan.
