Boniva (also known as Ibandronic Acid)
Mechanism:
Boniva, potent medication in the bisphosphonate class, reduces bone resorption and turnover and results in a net gain in bone mass.
Indications:
– Treatment of Post-menopausal osteoporosis. Can reduce incidence of vertebral fractures.
– Prevention of Post-menopausal osteoporosis.
Contraindications:
Patients with hypocalcemia or renal impairment should consult a physician prior to starting on Boniva.
Administration:
Boniva is administered every 3 months as an infusion while patient is also receiving oral calcium and Vitamin D therapy.
