Polyneuropathy

Overview

Polyneuropathy is a condition where multiple peripheral nerves throughout the bodybecome damaged, leading to weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain—usually in the hands and feet. It can be caused by diabetes, autoimmune diseases, infections, medications, or genetic disorders. Symptoms often progress gradually and can interfere with mobility and daily functioning.

Symptoms

Polyneuropathy symptoms often start in the feet or hands and may spread upward.

Common signs include:

• Numbness or tingling (“pins and needles”)

• Burning or stabbing pain

• Muscle weakness or difficulty walking

• Loss of coordination or balance

• Sensitivity to touch

• Changes in blood pressure or heart rate (in autonomic neuropathy)

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may worsen over time if untreated.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you experience:

• Persistent numbness, tingling, or pain in your hands or feet

• Muscle weakness or frequent falls

• Unexplained changes in balance or coordination

• Symptoms interfering with sleep, walking, or daily activities

Early diagnosis may prevent progression and improve outcomes.

Causes and Risk Factors

Polyneuropathy can develop from many underlying conditions or exposures, including:

• Diabetes (most common cause)

• Autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)

• Infections (e.g., HIV, Lyme disease, hepatitis)

• Vitamin deficiencies (especially B1, B6, B12, and E)

• Alcohol misuse

• Chemotherapy or certain medications

• Hereditary disorders (e.g., Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease)

Medication and Treatment Risks

Treatment depends on the cause and may include managing underlying conditions, relieving symptoms, and using medications to protect nerve function.

Common treatments:

• Pain relievers, antidepressants, or anti-seizure medications

• Physical therapy for strength and balance

• IVIG or immunosuppressants for autoimmune-related cases

Medication risks to consider:

• Sedation, dizziness, or mood changes from nerve pain medications

• Immune therapies may increase infection risk

• Some drugs can worsen neuropathy if not properly monitored
