When the temperatures rise, few drinks are as refreshing as a cold glass of homemade lemonade. Not only is lemonade a delicious way to stay hydrated, but it can also provide some benefits for individuals living with chronic illnesses when enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.

Easy Homemade Lemonade Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 4–6 lemons)
  • 4 cups cold water
  • ¼–½ cup honey, maple syrup, or sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Ice
  • Lemon slices and fresh mint for garnish (optional)

Directions

  1. Wash and juice the lemons.
  2. In a pitcher, combine the lemon juice and sweetener. Stir until dissolved.
  3. Add the cold water and mix well.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
  5. Serve over ice and garnish with lemon slices or mint.

Optional Hydration Boost

For an extra electrolyte boost, add:

  • A pinch of sea salt
  • A splash of coconut water
  • Fresh orange slices for additional potassium

During hot summer months, fluids are lost more quickly through sweating, making hydration even more essential. Staying hydrated helps support circulation, digestion, energy levels, and overall well-being. Lemons are naturally rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports immune function and helps protect cells from oxidative stress. When paired with ingredients such as coconut water or a small amount of sea salt, homemade lemonade can help replenish electrolytes that are lost through sweat.
